The recent appointment of Mari Elka Pangestu to the new post of Minister of Culture and the Creative Economy has raised questions on what exactly will comprise her new responsibilities.

According to The Jakarta Post, the blueprint for Pangestu’s new job description beyonf tourism concerns  is laid out in Presidential Decree Number 6 of 2009 that stipulates 14 subsectors for the creative economy, namely:

  • Arts and antiques
  • The performing arts
  • Handicrafts
  • Film, video and photography
  • Fashion
  • Interactive games
  • Advertising
  • Design
  • Software and computers
  • Music
  • Architecture
  • Publishing
  • Television and radio
  • Research and Development

Pangestu has explained how her Ministry would continue to manage the subsectors directly linked to tourism. Meanwhile, other sub-sections of the creative economy, such as fashion, would be jointly managed and coordinated with related ministries. The creative aspects of fashion would fall within her purview, while sales and production of garments would come under the Trade Ministry and garment production would be the responsibility of the Industry Minister.

Creative industries are estimated to contribute 7.28% of the total Indonesian gross domestic product.

Pangestu's portfolio of tourism matters will challenge her to achieve a target of 8 million foreign tourist target for  visitors to Indonesia in 2012 set by her predecessor, Jero Wacik.
