August is traditionally peak season for tourist visitors to Bali and, while business remains brisk throughout this month, the roadways across the island this year are not totally jammed. This seeming anomaly can be explained by the fact that many domestic tourists are taking a month-long holiday away form Bal during the Moslem fasting month of Ramadan that come to an end in late August.

Often overlooked is the fact that 60% of all Bali tourists are Indonesian nationals. In a country that is overwhelmingly Islamic, the largest source of island visitors - the domestic market, is staying closer to home during month in which food and drink are not consumed from sunrise to sunset. The fasting month in 2011 falls during the month of August.

With the tendency of domestic tourists to either bring the family car or rent a car whiles holidaying in Bali the downturn in domestic tourism is especially noticeable in the decline in vehicles crisscrossing Bali's roads during the fasting month.

Fortunately, the momentary decline in domestic tourists is bolstered by strong inflows of tourists from neighboring countries, Australia, Europe and the Americas.  Any respite from the flood of domestic tourist visitors will come to an abrupt end on August 25th as domestic tourists arrive in force for the prolonged Lebaran Holiday period expected to last until September 4, 2011.

Balidiscovery.com reports that by mid-August finding rooms over the last week of August and the first week of September had become problematic. Extra manpower is working extended shifts to continually survey hotels and villas for vacancies to help meet the strong demand over the Lebaran holidays.
