Indonesia and Australia have signed a memorandum of understanding that allows a 70% increase in air passengers between the two countries to 25,000 seats each week.

A revised memorandum of understanding covering air rights was signed in July 2010.

Both countries agreed to increase capacity by 70% from the current 14,800 seats traveling each week between the two countries. The new agreement provides for a total of 25,000 seats.

Explaining the basis for the increase, Edward A. Silooy, director for air transportation at the Indonesian Directorate General of Civil Aviation, said: “Many of our people now school their children in Australia, thus the need for more air transportation. At the same time, there are many Australians holidaying in Indonesia.”

The seats will be utilized by both Indonesian and Australian airline flying between the two countries. The Indonesian airlines currently flying to Australia include: Garuda Indonesia, Batavia Air and Indonesia Air Asia. The Australian airlines flying to Indonesia are Qantas, JetStar, Virgin Blue and Strategic Airlines.
