November 2011 Bali will be awash with “all things ASEAN” as it hosts at least 16 heads of state at the ASEAN Summit and the ASEAN Film Festival.
In keeping with this theme, Bali’s Museum Pasifika, in cooperation with Ministry of Trade and Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, will be holding an ASEAN Art Exhibition through November 23, 2011.
The ASEAN Art Exhibition – celebrating art from artists resident or born in one of the 10-country Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN), was formally opened by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on October 24, 2011, while he was in Bali attending the ASEAN Fair.
Museum Pasifika
Open in 2006, Museum Pasifika’s collection focuses on Asia and the Pacific; mirroring the unique position of Indonesia and Bali that bridges these two regions of the world. To its visitors, the various collections of the museum, presented in 11 thematic rooms, propose a fascinating art voyage throughout a wide area that cover the 10 ASEAN member countries, the Melanesian and Polynesian Pacific, as well, as South and East Asia.
As the host country of the museum, Indonesia is well represented at the museum, with paintings and sculptures by national as well as by expatriate artists resident in Indonesia.
The collection of premier art from the Pacific islands is one of the most complete in the world.
The current ASEAN Art Exhibition at Museum Pasifika showcases the 10 nations of the association: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, The Philippines and Vietnam. The artists selected, two per country , are either nationals of the respective country or artists with a long association with that ASEAN nation. Several, like Lee Man Fong, Georges Groslier and Antonio Blanco, cover two countries in ASEAN with which they share a life bond.
Without exception, each of thee featured artists share a common love and admiration for the people and cultures of the region. The stylistic spectrum on display runs from naturalist to contemporary.
