7.7 Million Visitor Target for Indonesia in 2011

Following a Record-Breaking Year, Indonesia Projecting 10% Growth in Arrivals in 2011.

(1/3/2011) Indonesia's Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, has confirmed a target of 7.7 million foreign tourist visitors for Indonesia in 2011 – an increase of 10% over the total arrival achieved in 2010. Using a bifurcated approach, the Ministry is setting 7.7 million as its optimistic or "best case" scenario with 7.3 million visitors as a more pessimistic projection.

Pleased that preliminary arrival counts for 2010 show more than 7 million foreign visitors, Wacik is confident that Indonesia will surpass the 8.5% rate of growth achieved in 2010 over 2009 when there were 6,452,259 foreign tourists. Wacik, quoted in Bali Post, said, "this year's arrival achievement surpassed the pessimistic target of 6.75 million foreign arrivals contained within the Minister of Culture and Tourism's working contract commitment with the President and also surpassed our optimistic target of 7 million."

The preliminary count for nation-wide foreign tourist arrivals in 2010 stands at 7,000,571.

The Ministry also calculates that US$7.6 billion in foreign exchange was garnered from foreign tourists who spent an average of US$1,085,70 per visitor during an average stay of 8.04 days. When compared to 2009, the average spend increased 9% while the length of stay extended by 5%.

Domestic Tourism

The total number of domestic tourists in 2010 is put at 234 million trips representing tourism-related expenditures of Rp. 138 trillion (US$15.3 billion), an increase in total trip numbers by 3.05%, The Ministry has set a target of 237 million domestic trips for 2011.

A strong domestic and international market has resulted in a nation-wide average occupancy of 50.38% at all starred hotels, a 1.99 point increase over the average occupancy rate of 2009 (48.29%).

New Branding for Indonesian Tourism

Minister Wacik also announced the new branding for Indonesian tourism in 2011 as "Wonderful Indonesia" - focusing on eco-tourism, culture and MICE (meetings, incentive, culture and exhibitions).

Wacik has called on the tourism industry to protect Indonesia's environment and promote the country's rich cultural diversity to the world.
