John van de Sterren

Born in Sukabumi, West Java, in 1938, he returned to Indonesia to develop a life-long passion for painting after a lengthy sojourn in New Zealand.

John is the quintessential painter of landscapes and heritage buildings. He fires and brightens our imaginations with his unforgettable works in oil and charcoal.

John's work is a result of observation, feelings and direct expression. He initially sketches in charcoal resulting in works that evolved into oil paintings, delivered in a strong, personal and typically unconventional way. His style is Fauvist.

His work depicts a variety of the landmarks, iconic historical sites, enigmatic landscapes and horizons, still life and portraits, all depicted in strong strokes betraying an individualistic dynamism.

At Alila Villa Soori, John van der Sterren will be exhibiting a selection of his charcoals and paintings in an exhibition to be opened September 15, 2012.

Those purchasing art will support the John Fawcett Foundation that provides free cataract surgery to needy Indonesians.
